About TPANZ
To give members a choice of representation. Teachers have the ability to join a union that's truly independent, not one selected by the Government or your employer. (See our membership fees for the comparative rates.)
All Teachers, including Senior Teachers, Heads of Departments and Executive Principals, can join. Membership fees don't differ based on your role - only on the number of hours you work a fortnight (see our membership options).
We provide cover New Zealand-wide. We endeavour to provide in-person support where practicable; if we're unable to, we'll assist with your issues via video conference or phone call.
Yes. TPANZ is a registered trade union under the Employment Relations Act 2000. NZ Teachers' United Incorporated, which trades as TPANZ, is an incorporated society and is on the NZ Companies Office register of unions.
Registered unions are independent of employers and run under democratic rules. Under the Employment Relations Act 2000, a registered union can bargain for collective agreements and represent its members in dealings with their employer. For you, that means a union that is accountable to its members and has the legal standing to act for them.
Yes. The Employment Relations Act 2000 gives you the freedom to choose whether to join a union, and which one. You don't need your employer's permission, and your employer can't pressure you to join or not join. If your workplace already has a collective agreement negotiated by another union, what applies to you depends on that agreement and your employment agreement, so talk to us before you decide.
Services
Our expert advocate and legal team provide industrial support for a variety of workplace issues including collective bargaining, industrial disputes, pay disputes, bullying and more. We work with you to resolve your issue.
We advocate strongly on workplace policy, procedures and system changes. You are entitled to appoint one of our TPANZ representatives to the bargaining table to negotiate your individual employment agreement. You can also appoint us to represent you for your Collective Agreement. If you have a Collective/Individual Agreement you'd like us to bargain for you, please check the "Collective Bargaining Representation Request" section of your member dashboard.
Fees and Payments
No. That's how our membership fees are able to remain so competitive.
Yes. Your tax invoice/statement is emailed following each payment and can be downloaded from the billing portal in your member dashboard.
We're unable to accept resignations over the phone, as we can't verify your identity that way. Your resignation must be in writing - head to your member dashboard, complete the membership change request form, and one of our friendly staff will help process it.
Member Disputes
We pride ourselves on being able to provide quality member-to-member dispute representation, a membership perk often not found with our competitors. We provide both parties to a dispute with quality representation, and if necessary we also refer matters to third-party legal representatives to protect the privacy of each member.
