Who we are
The Teachers' Professional Association of New Zealand (TPANZ) is a registered trade union whose principal purpose is to protect and promote the interests of members in matters concerning their employment or professional engagement. No membership fees are used to support any political party, so we are able to source and/or provide representation for all members, on all issues.
What being a registered union means
Registered trade unions in New Zealand are independent of employers and run under democratic rules, including secret ballot provisions. Being registered under the Employment Relations Act 2000 is what lets TPANZ bargain for collective agreements and represent members.
- Freedom of association. You choose whether to join a union, and which one.
- Collective bargaining. Appoint TPANZ as your bargaining agent and we negotiate for you.
- Representation. Our industrial advocates support you with workplace problems.
- Member control. Members elect their branch executive. The rules are in our constitution.
What we believe
The Teachers' Professional Association of New Zealand is a group of teachers who wanted to provide an alternate voice. They had heard of the success of sister-organisations and wanted to join tens of thousands of other workers who had decided to form independent unions under the NZ Unions banner. TPANZ supports:
- Improving teacher workloads.
- More teachers being offered full-time positions.
- Restoring trust in teachers.
- Decreasing the over-reliance on teachers to parent children.
- Protection from workplace bullying and violence from pupils, parents and administration.
TPANZ remains fully committed to defending your right to perform your work without unnecessary interference from Government bureaucrats, and respects the educational training undergone to achieve this right.
